Japan is one of those countries which instantly conjures up mental images; futuristic urban jungles, snow-clad Mt Fuji, sumo wrestlers and geishas, tranquil gardens & temples, the Hiroshima Memorial and the Bullet Train. This incredible mix of the ancient and modern, the familiar and strange, make this country an inspiring destination to visit and there’s no better way to explore than on one of our Japan tours. Away from the classic highlights of Tokyo and Kyoto you have the scenically majestic Alpine regions or sub-tropical Okinawa.
Things to do and See
Hakone
Hakone is a mountainous
area west of Tokyo in Japan. The Hakone checkpoint on the historical Tokaido
road marks the beginning of the Kanto region. The volcanically active Fuji-Hakone-Izu NationalPark,
centered around Lake Ashinoko,
is a popular tourist attraction well known for its onsen (hot springs) and its
views of Mount Fuji. Hakone is the perfect blend of old world charm and
tradition, and the sophistication of Japanese modern resort culture.
Hiroshima
Hiroshima is an industrial city of wide
boulevards and criss-crossing rivers, located along the coast of the Seto
Inland Sea. Although many only know it for the horrific split second on August
6, 1945, when it became the site of the world's first atomic bomb attack, it is
now a modern, cosmopolitan city with excellent cuisine and a bustling
nightlife. Hiroshima has a population of more than 1.1 million. Automobiles are
a major local industry, with Mazda's corporate headquarters nearby. There are
three excellent art museums in the city center, some of Japan's most fanatical
sports fans, and a wide range of culinary delights.
Kanazawa
Kanazawa is a historic city in Ishikawa
prefecture, Japan. Kanazawa is one of the overlooked jewels of Japanese tourism
although not by the Japanese, who visit in droves. Its relatively remote
location, off the beaten (shinkansen) track, has perhaps unfairly contributed
to a lower number of foreign tourists. Kyoto's offerings of temples and shrines
are all very well, but Japanese history and culture is not just about them. The
samurai, the merchants, the geisha, and the lords have all left their mark on
Kanazawa in a compact, easily navigable central area. Kanazawa is part of the
UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a City of Crafts and Folk Art. Kanazawa
cuisine is famous throughout Japan, particularly its seafood since it lies in
the sweet spot of the hot south and cold north currents.
Kyoto
Kyoto is a
huge city with several district articles containing sightseeing, restaurant,
nightlife and accommodation listings considers printing them all.Kyoto was the capital of Japan for over a
millennium, and carries a reputation as its most beautiful city. However,
visitors may be surprised by how much work they will have to do to see Kyoto's
beautiful side. Most first impressions of the city will be of the urban sprawl
of central Kyoto, around the ultra-modern glass-and-steel train station, which
is itself an example of a city steeped in tradition colliding with the modern
world.
Miyajima Island
Miyajima is one of the crown jewels of Japan,
and certainly one of its finest views. Located off the coast of Hiroshima, the
serene beauty of the island is an essential coda to that city. Miyajima has
been considered a holy place for most of Japanese history. In 806 AD, the monk Kobo Daishi ascended Mt. Misen and
established the mountain as an ascetic site for the Shingon sect of Buddhism.
Miyajima can be reached by sea from Hiroshima.
Nara
Nara is an ancient
capital city in Nara Prefecture, Kansai region of Japan. Throughout 2010 the
city celebrated its 1300th anniversary. Overshadowed by its more famous
neighbor Kyoto, Nara is omitted from many a time-pressed tourist's itinerary.
However, Nara is home to many important scenic and historical sites, and today
preserves its main sights much more attractively than Kyoto within Nara Park and neighborhoods like Naramachi.
Nikko
Nikko is a small town to
the north of Tokyo, in Tochigi Prefecture. The first temple in Nikko was
founded more than 1,200 years ago along the shores of the Daiya River. However,
in 1616, the dying Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu made it known that his final wish was
for his successors to "Build a small shrine in Nikko and enshrine me as the
God. I will be the guardian of peace keeping in Japan." As a result, Nikko
became home of the mausoleums of the
Tokugawa Shoguns, which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Unlike
most Japanese temples and shrines, the buildings here are extremely gaudy and
ornate, with multicolored carvings and plenty of gold leaf, and show heavy
Chinese influence. Some sense of dignity is restored by a magnificent forest of
over 13,000 cedar trees, covering the entire area.
Takayama
Hida-Takayama locally, Takayamis a city near the northern Japan Alps of Gifu
prefecture, in the Chubu region of Japan. Takayama is famous for its
well-preserved quarter with Edo-style streets, only rivaled by those of
Kanazawa.
Tokyo
Tokyo
is the capital of Japan. This largest entertainment district in East Asia is
visited by many tourists from abroad. It is a place where Japanese-style
entertainment is condensed, with various types of restaurants where you can
enjoy cuisine from different regions of Japan and throughout the world, theaters,
clubs with live music, comic cafes where you can browse many comic books,
Japanese-style pubs, and pachinko parlors. Currently, a small area of about 600
square meters bordered by Yasukuni Street, Seibu Shinjuku Ekimae Street,
Shokuan Street and Shinjuku Kuyakusho Street is filled with more than 4000
commercial establishments.
