Many wonderful beaches are just part of one of the worlds longest coastlines and it takes about three decades to visit and experience every island. Since Spanish colonial times, the country has been Asias largest Catholic country. Over a hundred ethnic groups, a mixture of foreign influences and a fusion of culture and arts have enhanced the uniqueness of the Filipino identity and the wonder that is the Philippines.
Things to do and See
Baguio
Due
to its cool mountain weather, Baguio is considered the summer capital of the
Philippines. Because of its many pine trees it is also called the City of Pines. Baguio is a city and hill station
located at an altitude of 1450 meters above sea level (4760 feet) on the
Cordillera Administrative Region in the middle of the island of Luzon, in the
Philippines. Baguio is one of the most famous cities in the Philippines and has
been celebrated as the Summer Capital of the country for the past 99 years. A
day isn’t enough in this town, so keep your itinerary open; you might want to
stay for a while.
Banaue
Banaue is a town on the Cordillera mountain
range in the north of the island of Luzon, in the Philippines. It is mainly
visited for its stunning rice terraces, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Sometimes called the "Eighth Wonder of the World", the 2000 years old
Banaue rice terraces are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and while many are still
in use today, the outer rims are showing signs of deterioration. They were
created by the Ifugao (local native people), in a massive engineering project
to cover the sides of the valleys (probably 200 meters from floor to rim) for
several miles, irrigated by means of mountain streams and springs that have
been tapped and channeled into canals that run downhill through the rice
terraces.
Corregidor
Corregidor
is a small rocky island in the Philippines about 48 kilometers west of Manila
which is strategically located at the entrance of Manila Bay. This island
fortress stands as a memorial for the courage, valor, and heroism of its
Filipino and American defenders who bravely held their ground against the
overwhelming number of invading Japanese forces during World War II. The island is about 48 kilometers west
of Manila and is part of the municipality of Cavite City. It is shaped like a
tadpole, with its tail running eastward, and has a land area of 9 square
kilometers. Along with Caballo Island (which lies 2 kilometers south of the
tail's tip), it partially blocks the entrance of Manila Bay, and thus has
strategic importance.
Laoag
When you start your
Ilocos Norte adventure, you are most likely to start in Laoag. It’s the capital
of Ilocos Norte and the hub of everything Ilocano. Just go to Museo Ilocos Norte and you’ll see. The region’s
main offices and universities are also located here. World-famous sights such
as Pagudpud, Paoay and Vigan are less than an hour’s journey away. Ilocos Norte
is a coastal province so different colors of sand can be found here — the
blackest of black in Laoag, the brown sands in Currimao,
the white sands in Pagudpud. Some parts in Pagudpud are also lined with a
rocky shore.
Manila
Fourteen cities and three
municipalities make up what is officially known as Metro Manila, referred to by
most residents and visitors simply as MANILA, a massive, clamorous conurbation
that covers 636 square kilometers and is home to almost 10 million people. To
add to the confusion the old part of Manila – the area near the old walled city
of Intramuros – officially remains the capital and seat of the Philippine
government. In practice, the seats of government are all around Metro Manila,
with the executive, administrative and judicial branches in Manila, the Senate
in Pasay City and Congress in Quezon City. Manila is nevertheless rapidly
developing and has its own rich history and experiences to offer. The city is
sprawling, bustling, and culturally complicated, with a colorful multi-cultural
heritage and varied nightlife.
Pagsanjan
About 100 km. southeast of Manila is
the town of Pagsanjan, site of the famous Pagsanjan Falls. Hop on a
wooden dug-out canoe from a resort, for
a smooth upstream ride to the falls amidst a 300
ft high gorge. Feel the deeply cool waters under
the falls. Go for a more thrilling yet joyful ride downstream shooting the
rapids as boatmen skillfully maneuver the canoe.
Tagaytay City
Drive
though the countryside passing through coastal villages, rice fields, fruit
orchards and coconut plantations shall take you to the cool clime of Tagaytay.
Nestled in a secluded corner of Tagaytay Ridge about 2,250 feet above sea level
is Tagaytay Highlandswhich
offers a panoramic view of one of the rarest known sights in the world – the
smallest Taal Volcano. Spend the
rest of the day enjoying Tagaytay’s natural attractions: its beautiful views,
dramatic terrain and cool mountain climate. Lunch will be served at Sonya’s Garden, a flower garden tucked
in the gentle rolling hills of Tagaytay that has, over the years, attracted
many tourists seeking respite from the hum drum of city life. Expect lunch as a
simple affair with a filling country cuisine, using fresh and organically grown
ingredients from the garden, served in fine tableware that complements the
idyllic setting.
Vigan
Vigan is in Northern Luzon. Its Spanish
colonial influence in local architecture and old-world charm make it a unique
city in the Philippines. Best time to walk the cobbled streets is probably in
the 90 minutes before dawn when the poisonous fug from two stroke engines has
subsided and you can appreciate its remarkable state of preservation without
being deafened and jostled.
Villa Escudero
A comfortable two-and-a-half-hour
drive south of Manila, Villa Escudero, a former sugarcane plantation, is toured
aboard a rustic carabao-drawn carriage. The highlight of a tour is the visit to
the museum where an eclectic collection of religious icons, rare coins,
costumes, furniture and dioramas of Philippine wildlife can be viewed. The
other unique feature is a native buffet lunch by a waterfall where you listen
to the cascades and cool your feet in the running water while feasting on
native delicacies.
