Things to do and See
Johor Bahru
Johor Bahru is the state capital
of Johor in southern peninsular Malaysia, just across the causeway from
Singapore. A bustling city but one with little of interest for the casual
tourist, it is a significant regional transport and manufacturing hub.
Legoland
Legoland
Malaysia theme park, the first in Asia, is situated in Nusajaya, Johor.
Situated on 76 acres of land, the park is the sixth such park to open in the
world. Legoland is built with over 40 interactive rides, shows and attractions.
One of the main attractions here is the Miniland. More than 30 million lego
bricks are used in the building of these monuments including the Petronas Twin
Towers, The Merlion Statue, Taj Mahal and others. In the theme park, there is
also an Observation Tower which is the highest tower in Legoland Malaysia, some
60 meters from the ground. This is also the third Legoland observation tower in
the world after Denmark and Germany.
Pulau Sibu
Pulau Sibu is a pleasant hideaway with
its lush tropical vegetation, endless stretches of golden beaches and clear
blue waters. The island is also dotted with numerous sea caves carved out of
rocks. The constant pounding of the sea during the monsoon season has given the
island a beautiful yet rugged appearance. There are facilities for scuba
diving, snorkelling, windsurfing, sailing and angling. Visitors can go for a
hike through the jungle leading to unspoilt mangrove swamps or visit the
kelong, or jetty, where anchovies are caught. Alternatively, head for the
kampung, or village, to get a first-hand look at how coconuts are smoked to
make copra.
Pulau Aur
The island off Mersing, along with
Pulau Dayang, Pulau Lang and Pulau Pinang, are rated among the best diving
destinations within the Johor Marine Park Area. The deeper waters around the
area ensure good visibility and a large variety of marine life. The island is
especially popular among weekend divers.
Endau Rompin National Park
Endau
Rompin, straddling the Johor/Pahang border, is the second National Park after
Taman Negara. It covers an area of approximately 80,000 hectares of rich and
exotic flora and fauna, encompassing the watershed of the rivers Endau and
Rompin, from which it derives its name. In other words, this place is huge. The
park is home to a vast species of birds, mammals, frogs, insects and exotic
varieties of orchids, herbs, medicinal plants and trees. It seems that every
time a scientific expedition returns from Endau Rompin, they discover a new
species! To protect the pristine environment, only limited areas of the park
are open for ecotourism. Entry to the park requires a special permit from the
Johor National Park Corporation.
Langkawi Island
Off the coast of Kedah is a cluster of
99 islands offering the best of many worlds: beautiful beaches, world- class
infrastructure, mangroves rich in flora and fauna, ultra- cheap duty-free
shopping and fascinating legends. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah,
which is adjacent to the Thai border. Despite what looks like a slant towards
tourism, many of the islanders are actually farmers, fishermen and
entrepreneurs. Experience the beautiful countryside and peaceful landscape of
paddy fields by renting a car and taking a leisurely drive around the island.
Some of Langkawi's most rustic and memorable views are along the road that
circles the island.
Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur is the federal
capital and the largest city in Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur has grown from a small
sleepy Chinese tin-mining village to a bustling metropolis of around 6.5
million (city-proper population of 1.8 million) in just 150 years. A cultural
melting pot with some of the world's cheapest 5-star hotels, cheap, great
shopping, even better food and some of nature's wonders in just an hour away,
this dynamic city has much to offer for every visitor.
Genting Highlands
The
fun never stops at Genting, City of Entertainment, perched on the top of cool,
breezy Genting Highlands. One big attraction in Genting is the cool weather.
Because of the 2,000m altitude, Malaysians like to visit just to enjoy the
'European' weather! In the evening, there is spectacular entertainment at the
Genting International Showroom or Pavilion, be it a thrilling magic show or an
ice-skating extravaganza. There are also opportunities to go shopping at First
World Plaza, visit the indoor and outdoor theme parks and feast on a wide range
of delicious food at the many restaurants.
Cameron Highlands, Pahang
There
are many things to see and do in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia's largest highland
resort. Walks through lovely little villages, visits to the butterfly,
strawberry, honey bee farms and sprawling tea plantations or meals at the
delightful Tudor-styled country inns, are all pleasurable and relaxing
activities to be experienced here. You can't beat the weather up here. A few
days out of the sweltering lowland heat will surely recharge your batteries.
Penang
Penang is an island off the northwestern
coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is also the name of the Malaysian state which
is made up of Penang Island and the facing strip of territory on the mainland
called Seberang Perai. Penang's
beaches are nice, though a little lackluster when compared to those in some
other Malaysian states, but this is more than compensated for by the island's
rich multicultural history which is full of Malay, Chinese, Indian and European
influences. Penang is also well known for being the "food paradise"
of Malaysia.
Putrajaya
Putrajayaan
"Intelligent Garden City" and the federal administrative capital of
Malaysia, is a showcase city under construction some 30 km south of the capital
Kuala Lumpur. Putrajaya's main sights are the colossal showcase buildings put up in this future capital, all in
the central Core District.
Batu Caves
Batu
Caves is an iconic and popular tourist attraction in Selangor. Site of a Hindu
temple and shrine, Batu Caves attracts thousands of worshippers and tourists,
especially during the annual Hindu festival, Thaipusam. A limestone outcrop
located just north of Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves has three main caves featuring
temples and Hindu shrines. Its main attraction is the large statue of the
Hindu God at the entrance, besides a steep 272 climb up its steps to finally
view the stunning skyline of the city centre.
