Things to do and See
Colombo
Bursting
with life and colour, the islands largest city which was once the Capital of
Sri Lanka, is now its Commercial hub. Colombo has wildly varying architecture
that span centuries and depict many styles. Colonial buildings influenced by
the Portuguese, Dutch and British exist alongside structures built in Buddhist,
Hindu, Islamic, Indian and Contemporary architectural styles. No other place is
this more evident in the Fort area. Here one may find new towering skyscrapers
as well as historic buildings dating far back as the 1700s.
The old world charm is retained. A 100-year-old
clock tower and several British built, colonial buildings are still to be seen
in the city. The Pettah bazaar – where one can shop for bargains, a Hindu and a
Buddhist temple, residential areas where you find the stately homes of the
affluent, the Colombo museum, the Bandaranaike memorial international
conference hall – an outright gift to Sri Lanka from the people’s republic of
china, the new parliament in Sri Jayawardenapura and the folk art center are
some of the places of interest that one can visit. Visit shopping complexes
such as Odel, House Of Fashion, Majestic City & Crescat Boulevard.
Adam's Peak
Adam's Peak is considered a place of
worship and pilgrimage by many religions. The 7,297 foot peak, also known as
Sri Pada, is home to a foot imprint on a rock at its summit. Depending on the
faith, the foot print has been considered that of Buddha, the god Shiva, St.
Thomas, and even, Adam after he was expelled from the garden of Eden. The
stairway to the top is believed to be one of the longest in the world. After
reaching the top, climbers can ring the bell to mark the journey the just made.
The panoramic view that one gets makes the journey well-worth the effort.
Reaching Delhousie (The town at the foot of Adam's Peak) from Colombo can be an
adventure in itself, unless you are lucky enough to find a direct bus. The
route is Colombo-Hatton-Maskeliya-Delhousie. The distance is quite short on the
map but can take 6-8 hours.
Kandy
Kandy - the hill capital. Venue of the annual
Perahera. The last stronghold of the Sinhala Kings was finally ceded to the

everywhere. Set
amidst the verdant hills of the Kandy Valley, this UNESCO World Heritage Site
is one of Sri Lanka’s premier tourist attractions and is easily accessible from
the Cultural Triangle. The country’s last royal capital and home to an array of
beautiful temples, including the revered Temple of the Tooth, relic of the Lord

is also known as Lion Rock because of the huge lion that used to stand at the
entrance to the fortress. Within its triple-moated defense the huge rock rises
almost to a sheer height of 500ft. On its summit are the foundations of what
was once a great and sumptuous palace and gardens complete with swimming pool.

delicacy of their original color.

The Buddhist mural paintings (covering an area of 2,100 m2) are of particular importance, as are the 157 statues.
